AEO Audit — Answer Engine Optimization for Product Pages
Score your catalog against Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) standards. Free audit, ranked recommendations.
Search returns lists. Answer engines return answers. When a shopper asks an AI assistant "which 12-inch tablet has the best battery life under $500?", the engine doesn't send back ten links — it returns a specific product, with a specific spec. The product that wins is the one the engine could parse, trust, and quote without ambiguity. AEO is the discipline of being that product.
What AEO is
Answer Engine Optimization is the discipline of structuring your content so that answer engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Microsoft Copilot — can pull from it directly and cite it as the source. For e-commerce that means making product facts unambiguous, identifiers present, and the spec table extractable so the engine can answer comparative questions with your product instead of a competitor's.
SEO vs GEO vs AEO
Three disciplines, one underlying problem.
- SEO. Rank in the SERP. Surface: Google and Bing. Click required: yes. Levers: links, keywords. Failure: the page doesn't rank.
- GEO. Be cited in any AI output. Surface: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini. Click required: sometimes. Levers: structured data, accuracy. Failure: the page is ignored.
- AEO. Be the answer to a question. Surface: AI Overviews, Perplexity, Copilot. Click required: rarely. Levers: identifiers, spec extractability. Failure: a competitor is the answer.
The underlying fixes overlap heavily — Bhoroli scores all three under one PDQ score.
Where catalogs fail AEO
- No structured data. No JSON-LD Product schema, or schema present but values empty. Agents fall back to scraping prose, which is unreliable.
- Missing identifiers. No GTIN, MPN, or brand. Agents can't cross-reference your product against reviews, prices, or specs from other sources.
- Spec table as prose. Specs written as paragraphs instead of definition lists or tables. Easy for humans, ambiguous for machines.
- Copy/spec mismatch. Title says one thing, spec table says another. Conservative agents skip ambiguous products entirely.
- JavaScript-only content. Critical spec rendered client-side after a delay. Headless crawlers without a real browser miss it.
